  7. The following information was not available at the time that the 
  8. User Guide was printed.  Please take the time to read this BEFORE 
  9. you begin, for important up-to-date information on the use of 
  10. Smart Label Printer Plus for Windows and DOS.  You may want to 
  11. print this file and keep it with your User Guide for easy 
  12. reference.

  14. This release includes versions of SLP for both DOS and Windows 
  15. environments. The software may be installed from either the DOS 
  16. command line prompt or from within Windows (using File/Run).  
  17. Please install the software from the environment where you will be 
  18. using SLP Plus most often.
  19.  
  20. NOTE:  If you already have a previous version of SLP installed on 
  21. the target system, install this version into the same directory.  
  22. The SLP program and related files will be updated automatically.
  23.  
  24. If you have SLP Plus for DOS loaded resident on the target system, 
  25. you must unload it from memory before beginning the installation 
  26. of this version or you will encounter problems.

  32. SLP PLUS FOR WINDOWS INSTALLATION
  33.  
  34. The User Guide states that WINSETUP.EXE will install the SLP icon 
  35. in the Accessories program group.  This version of WINSETUP.EXE 
  36. will create a program group called SLP Plus, in which it will 
  37. install icons for both SLP Plus for Windows and the SLP Font 
  38. Utility.

  42. VERSION 1.xx USERS

  44. If you are upgrading from SLP v1.xx and wish to use your old 
  45. Memory, be sure there are no blank lines within labels stored in 
  46. Memory or labels may be separated at the blank lines.

  52. Shared use on a network is not supported.

  62. WINDOWS 3.0 USERS

  64. Smart Label Printer Plus for Windows utilizes certain features 
  65. which are exclusive to Windows 3.1.  Although great care was taken 
  66. to provide as many features as possible to all users, there remain 
  67. some functions which are only available to Windows 3.1 users in 
  68. this release.

  71. TrueType(TM)
  72.  
  73. The SLP Font Utility allows you to convert a wide variety of 
  74. TrueType fonts into SLP Fonts.  This utility is dependent on the  
  75. support for this type of font built into Windows 3.1 and will not 
  76. work in Windows 3.0.

  79. SmartCapture(TM) Bar
  80.  
  81. The "Always On Top" and SmartCopy(TM) features require Windows 3.1 
  82. and will not work when this version is running under Windows 3.0.  
  83. The corresponding check boxes in Text Capture Settings are greyed 
  84. to indicate that they can not be selected.

  87. Using COM3 or COM4 in Windows 3.0
  88.  
  89. Windows 3.0 by default sets COM3 and COM4 at non-standard base 
  90. addresses.  If using either COM3 or COM4, be sure these are set 
  91. correctly in the SYSTEM.INI file.  For more detail on changing 
  92. these settings, please read the SYSINI2.TXT file in your Windows 
  93. directory.

  97. PRINTING LABELS

  99. If you install the software from the DOS prompt and want to use 
  100. the Windows version, make sure that you set the COM port in SLPW 
  101. (in the Label/Printer Setup menu) before trying to print a label.

  107. TROUBLESHOOTING PRINTING PROBLEMS WITH SLP PLUS FOR WINDOWS

  109. If SLP Plus for DOS prints successfully, but you find difficulty 
  110. printing from SLP Plus for Windows, check the following:
  111.  
  112. 1.    Check to be sure that the correct COM port is selected in 
  113. Printer Setup (in the Label Menu).
  114.  
  115. 2.    Be sure that "Flow Control" is set to "NONE" in Ports 
  116. settings in the Windows Control Panel.  See your Windows 
  117. manual for information on changing these settings.
  118.  
  119. 3.    Be sure that the Base address and IRQ settings match that of 
  120. your hardware.
  121.  
  122. 4.    If your mouse is attached to COM1, avoid using COM3 for the 
  123. Smart Label Printer.  Similarly, avoid using COM4 if your 
  124. mouse is attached to COM2.  NOTE:  This is generally not a 
  125. concern if using and EISA or MCA (PS/2) type system.
  126.  
  127. 5.    Avoid using non-sequential COM port assignments.  For 
  128. Example, if you have three serial ports, configure them as 
  129. COM1, COM2, and COM3, and not COM1, COM2, and COM4.  
  130.  
  131. NOTE:  Consult your dealer if you are not familiar with the 
  132. process performing changes to this hardware.

  142. DOS LOAD HIGH
  143.  
  144. Smart Label Printer Plus for DOS cannot be loaded into high memory 
  145. with the DOS LH parameter.  To use high memory, run SETUP and set 
  146. swapping to EMS or XMS.  Resident Size can be set as low as 9k.

  150. UNLOADING SMART LABEL PRINTER PLUS FOR DOS
  151.  
  152. When the SLP.EXE  program is loaded resident there are two ways to 
  153. unload and remove it from memory.
  154.  
  155.     1) From the Main Menu select 'Options'. From the Options 
  156.     menu select 'Unload'.
  157.  
  158.     2) From the DOS prompt type 'UNLOAD'.
  159.  
  160. Note: In either case the SLP.EXE will not unload if a program has 
  161. been loaded after the SLP.EXE.
  162.

  165. OTHER TSR'S MAY PREVENT SUCCESSFUL UNLOAD OF SLP.EXE
  166.  
  167. When running in resident mode, SLP Plus for DOS is a TSR 
  168. (Terminate and Stay Resident) program.  In addition to the special 
  169. loading requirements defined in the User Guide, you may wish to 
  170. note that the presence of some TSR's will prevent the successful 
  171. unloading of the SLP.EXE program.

  173. When SLP Plus is loaded resident after loading Carbon Copy, for 
  174. example, SLP Plus will not unload until after removing Carbon Copy 
  175. from memory first.

  179. SMARTCAPTURE FROM MULTIMATE
  180.  
  181. DOS SmartCapture(TM) will include the ruler in Multimate 
  182. Advantage.  To avoid this, you may find it easier to set 
  183. SmartCapture to Manual.

  187. HOT KEY SELECTION

  189. Avoid using the Alt key as part of your hot-key combination when 
  190. using Microsoft Word 5.x, Microsoft Works, Norton Utilities, or 
  191. other programs whose menu bars are activated with the Alt key.
